The length of your course of montelukast will depend on your allergy/asthma triggers. Seasonal allergy/asthma will require you to take the medication for just the specific time of year. However, if your symptoms occur the whole year round, then you need to take it daily. It is safe to take on a year-long basis.

Montelukast is in a class of medications called leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs). It works by blocking the action of substances in the body that cause the symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. It is used to prevent and treat symptoms of asthma and seasonal or year-round allergies. It can also be used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB).

When montelukast is used to treat asthma, it should be taken in the evening. If is used to prevent breathing difficulties during exercise, it should be taken at least 2 hours before exercise. If it is used to treat allergic rhinitis, it may be taken at any time of day.
